01 · The Frame

Four Pillars Merging Into One Tower

For most of recorded history, the great powers of a society stood apart. The church told people what to believe; the crown commanded the soldiers; the market fed and clothed the population; the academy held the keys to knowledge. Each was a different building, raised by a different hand, and the distance between them was itself a kind of safety. When one overreached, the others could pull it back. This report is about what happens when those buildings stop being separate — when narrative, coercion, production, and information are no longer counterweights but materials being fused into a single structure, controlled by the same overlapping few. The church, the crown, the market, and the academy are merging into one tower of power.

We are entering an era in which economic, technological, and coercive power is becoming concentrated in the hands of an extremely small elite — potentially a few hundred to a couple thousand individuals worldwide — at a level never seen before. By 2030, the trends suggest that wealth and influence will be hyper-concentrated among this tiny fraction of humanity, shrinking the distribution of power available to everyone else. From global wealth and corporate control to information flows, military force, and technological capability, power is converging upward at an accelerating pace, raising serious concerns about social stability, equity, and freedom.

The warning signs are already visible. Economic inequality is skyrocketing, with resources and wealth rapidly flowing to the top 1%. A handful of giant corporations are becoming the critical backbone of economies and supply chains, dominating markets and infrastructure. The traditional pillars of societal power — narrative, coercion, production, and information — are no longer separate spheres held in check by different groups. They are increasingly interlinked and controlled by overlapping elites, each pillar amplifying the others. What follows is a diagnosis of how this convergence might unfold: the four pillars, the canary indicators to watch, and the trigger events that could cause sudden, exponential jumps in power inequality.

Each pillar alone would be concerning. Together they suggest something the world has not faced before: not a tyrant limited by geography or by the technology of his age, but a convergence that is global in scale and enhanced by tools that never tire, never question, and never sleep. The purpose of naming the pillars now is to recognise the trajectory while there is still a window to alter it.

02 · Pillar One — Narrative

When a Few Hands Steer What Billions Believe

For centuries, control of ideology, religion, education, and public discourse was distributed among institutions that could not be reduced to one another — churches, monarchies, communities, and later the press and the universities. No single entity could fully dictate what an entire population believed. Today that distribution is collapsing into the hands of a few private platforms and the loud factions that dominate them. Social networks and algorithm-driven feeds have replaced traditional media and community voices for a majority of people, and especially for the young.

The first mechanism is algorithmic amplification of a vocal minority. Research shows that online discourse is disproportionately driven by a small, hyperactive minority of users, creating a false impression that extreme or fringe views are mainstream. In the United States, about 70% of social media users rarely or never post about politics — most voices stay silent while a vocal few dominate the conversation. Algorithmic ranking then amplifies the most sensational or polarising content from that minority, so a tiny fraction of users effectively dictate the narrative the majority sees, distorting the very perception of what consensus and reality are.

The second mechanism is ownership. As of 2025 there were 5.66 billion social media user accounts globally — over two-thirds of the world's population. The top five platforms, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, each carry on the order of one to three billion active users, and they are owned by an even smaller number of corporations. Decisions by a handful of executives — how an algorithm ranks content, which accounts to ban or boost — can shape the worldview of billions. Never before have so few people held so much power to steer the narratives that entire societies believe.

The third mechanism reaches the next generation directly. Today's children and teens are more exposed to social media than to parents or teachers. A recent study found 93% of American teens aged 13 to 17 use social media, averaging over four hours a day on these platforms — often more than they spend in direct conversation with family or in school. For context, a British survey found parents and children speak to each other only about 44 minutes a day, despite sharing a home for hours. Algorithms and online communities have become a dominant source of values, norms, and information for the young, superseding family, local community, and curriculum alike.

By 2030, if current trends hold, a majority of the global population will draw most of their information and worldview from a few digital networks. Whether by authoritarian design or by the blind dynamics of an attention algorithm, counter-narratives and grassroots voices are easily drowned out — making it hard for dissent or diverse perspectives to gain traction the moment they challenge the interests of those who dominate the platforms.

03 · Pillar Two — Coercion

The Soldier Who Could Refuse Is Being Retired

The power of force and deterrence — military might, policing, the ability to enforce rules — has always been limited by the need for human soldiers and public support. Armies and police forces are made of people, and people can question orders or refuse to turn against their own communities. Even the most tyrannical ruler had to keep the loyalty of his generals and troops, and often had to justify a war or a crackdown to avoid mutiny. That human check is eroding fast with the arrival of autonomous weapons, robotics, and AI-driven surveillance.

Modern militaries are deploying drones and developing autonomous weapon systems that can identify and attack with minimal human oversight. As the technology matures, a small remote team or an AI could command swarms of armed drones in place of a large army. Two consequences follow. Leaders can wage war or carry out violent crackdowns at the push of a button, with little risk to their own personnel. And the traditional influence of the rank-and-file evaporates. Security analysts warn that the gradual replacement of humans with fully autonomous weapons could make the decision to go to war easier — remove the danger to one's own soldiers, and you remove one of the oldest deterrents to violence. A roboticised force means a dictator or small clique can act without broad support and without fear of a coup, because machines do not revolt.

Automation is a force multiplier: fewer human warfighters are needed for the same mission. One U.S. Army analysis suggested that robotic support could let a brigade cut its personnel by 25% without a concomitant reduction in effectiveness. The infantry and junior officers who historically had to be convinced of a cause — and who could exercise moral judgment in refusing a horrific order — lose their sway. Power concentrates upward into a small cadre of commanders and technologists who control the machines, and the loyalty of machines is automatic. They will follow any command.

Surveillance completes the picture. China has installed hundreds of millions of AI-enabled cameras — over half the world's surveillance cameras are estimated to be there — using facial recognition to track movement, while algorithms flag individuals for arrest in Xinjiang based on innocuous behaviours and digital traces, imprisoning people for what they might do. This fusion of big data and policing is not confined to autocracies; many democracies are adopting AI surveillance and predictive policing too. The early evidence is that such tools have a chilling effect on protest: when people know an AI is watching, fewer risk speaking out. Analysts warn that AI law enforcement concentrates power among fewer and fewer people and can discourage or punish dissent, letting a single authority dominate a society without needing mass enforcers.

This is the most dystopian feature of the pillar: the removal of human conscience from enforcement. A human officer might hesitate to fire on unarmed civilians; a robot will not. History records soldiers who refused orders and turned against tyrants, acting as a final check on absolute power. By 2030 that check could be gone. The checkpoints to watch are concrete — the first regime to deploy fully autonomous weapons in conflict, the first streets widely patrolled by police robots. Once an authoritarian system has an infallible robot army and omnipresent surveillance, the usual tools of reform, mass protest and military defection, simply stop working. The door closes, and the next few years are when it is still ajar.

04 · Pillar Three — Production

When the Many Are No Longer Needed

The means of production and survival — food, water, energy, land, critical goods — were historically decentralised out of sheer logistical necessity. Millions of farmers, workers, and small producers were required to grow food and make goods, and even the richest king depended on the output of the masses and so had to account for them. Peasants could starve or revolt; labourers could strike. Economic power has been consolidating for decades, and we are now near a tipping point where a few mega-corporations and ultra-wealthy individuals control the lion's share of resources and production — and where automation threatens to erase the broader population's last source of leverage.

Wealth is concentrating at a vertiginous rate. Before the pandemic, the richest 1% owned about half of global wealth; by some estimates they are on track to control roughly two-thirds of all wealth by 2030. In the decade after the 2008 crash, the wealth of the top 1% grew at 6% a year, roughly double the rate of the other 99% — and the pandemic accelerated the divergence. As of early 2025 there were 2,769 billionaires globally, up from around 2,500 a year before, with a combined wealth of $15 trillion. A few thousand individuals now hold wealth equivalent to a significant fraction of global GDP, and many of them own the major corporations in tech, finance, and commodities — fusing economic power directly to narrative and technological power. The world's first trillionaires could emerge by 2030.

Corporate concentration sits at a hundred-year high. In the United States the top 1% of companies by size now control 90% of all business assets, up from 70% a few decades ago. The pattern spans sectors and continents. Four agribusiness giants — ADM, Bunge, Cargill, and Louis Dreyfus — control an estimated 70 to 90% of the global grain trade; four firms account for roughly 60% of the world's seed and pesticide sales; a few makers command nearly half the global farm-machinery market. The food on your table increasingly arrives through supply chains run by a handful of corporations, and in a crisis a small elite can effectively decide who eats.

Automation removes labour's oldest weapon: its indispensability. Advanced robotics and AI can replace much of the workforce by 2030 across manufacturing, logistics, and services, hollowing out the bargaining power of workers. The deeper danger is structural — a ruling elite that no longer depends on a large workforce has little incentive to share economic gains or political power. The autocrats of old could not simply eliminate the peasants, because someone had to till the land. A future elite running robot vertical farms and 3D-printed food factories needs no such bargain. The general population risks becoming economically superfluous to those at the top.

Finally, a few tech companies have become the critical infrastructure of the whole economy — cloud computing, payments, telecoms, AI services. Already, just two firms, Amazon and Microsoft, provide over 50% of global cloud computing (with Google not far behind), making them the backbone of countless businesses and governments. Such dependence confers enormous structural power: the ability to squeeze others, set the terms, and gain privileged access to data. The resilience of the entire economy could come to rest in a few private hands.

When productive power is held this tightly, inequality becomes self-perpetuating. The elite use their power to rewrite the rules — tax law, regulation, trade deals — in their own favour, entrenching their position. The thresholds to watch are stark: the top 1% owning more than the other 99% combined, or a single firm monopolising a critical resource such as AI chip manufacturing or farmland. Each milestone is a canary that the window for reversing inequality is closing, because once the means of survival are controlled by a tiny group, the many lose their leverage and the few no longer need them.

05 · Pillar Four — Information

Discovery Itself Becomes Privately Owned

Control over information and technology — scientific research, innovation, data, computing power — has always driven societal power. In the past, knowledge was relatively diffuse. Universities, public research institutions, and open scientific exchange meant advances spread globally, and human expertise, the ultimate driver of innovation, existed in every nation and community. With the rise of artificial intelligence, big data, and private R&D, that diffusion is reversing into consolidation. A few tech giants and powerful states are pulling ahead in AI, biotech, and other critical fields — and AI itself is beginning to outpace the collective output of human researchers in certain domains.

AI is a force multiplier for discovery. Machine learning can screen and design new drug molecules hundreds or thousands of times faster than traditional methods; an MIT system, EquiBind, predicted how molecules bind to proteins 1,200 times faster than a leading conventional algorithm, and other work has generated thousands of potential antibiotic compounds in minutes. The same leaps are reshaping materials science, logistics, and software. By 2030 the organisations with the most advanced AI could pull far ahead, solving complex problems faster than anyone without it — a self-reinforcing loop in which those who already hold cutting-edge AI make the next breakthroughs, which buy them still more power. Innovation stops being a level field that any clever group can enter, because it comes to require immense compute and data that only a few possess.

Those two inputs — data and compute — are themselves concentrating. A handful of companies and governments hold the largest datasets and the biggest supercomputers and cloud networks. Only a few firms can train a state-of-the-art model, because it costs tens of millions of dollars and vast data troves, which puts the next generation of AI firmly under their control. Without deliberate democratisation, a transformative breakthrough — even artificial general intelligence — could emerge from just one or two places, and whichever group reaches it first could vault into near-unassailable dominance.

Human expertise is losing its authority in parallel. AI can outstrip individual experts at tasks like generating hypotheses or sifting evidence; the credibility of independent expertise is undermined by narrative manipulation, with people trusting the echo chamber over the academy; and many leading experts are being absorbed into big corporations or secretive government programmes, following the money and the resources. The public and even governments grow dependent on a few firms and elite labs for new knowledge. If one company's AI discovers a cure for a major disease in 2028, that company gains enormous leverage over pricing, intellectual property, and geopolitics. The ones who design and own the technology hold power over everyone who uses it.

Technology is amoral: it does whatever it is told, without ethical restraint. If unethical people gain control of advanced AI, they can turn it to harmful ends without the technology protesting. And power attracts the power-hungry. Psychological research finds that traits like psychopathy and narcissism are significantly overrepresented in senior leadership — about 12% of top corporate executives show psychopathic traits, up to twelve times the general rate. The convergence of unchecked technology wielded by unchecked people is the most dangerous configuration of all, because it strips out both the human conscience and the human vulnerability that once restrained excess. Without intervention, the next decade could open with a techno-oligarchy already in place: wealth, AI, and influence held by a tiny group, the unaccountable architects of civilisation's future.

06 · Early Warnings

Ten Canaries in the Coal Mine

How will we know whether we are truly on the path to this 2030 vision? There are ten indicators to watch over the coming years — the canaries whose chirping tells us the convergence is not merely continuing but speeding up. Each is observable and measurable before the decade is out. If several are singing at once — wealth records broken alongside new autonomous-weapon deployments and tech monopolies at all-time highs — it confirms acceleration into the hyper-concentration scenario, and each canary marks a point of no return creeping closer.

01Top 1% wealth share exceeds 60% — the richest 1% approaching ownership of roughly two-thirds of world wealth, a threshold projected for 2030, with billionaire counts and combined wealth breaking records each year.

07Labor-force replacement rates — major employers cutting workforces through automation without losing output, with the gains accruing to owners and under-skilled unemployment rising sharply as human labour loses its leverage.
08Data and AI oligopoly benchmarks — one or two AI platforms becoming essential intermediaries for all AI services, a single model becoming the go-to foundation for critical applications, or an AGI achieved by one team alone.
09Legislative or regulatory capture moments — antitrust actions against Big Tech failing despite clear monopoly evidence, or tax reforms targeting the wealthy perennially stalled as inequality worsens, showing governance bending to oligarchic interests.
10Public-opinion and dissent indicators — most people feeling they have no influence on government while fearing the super-rich hold unfair sway (43% already do), paired with resignation: no new grassroots movements emerging as power locks in.

These are not abstractions; each can be read in the news and the data. And they are sticky. Once autonomous policing is common, it is far harder to return to community-based policing. Once a trillionaire exists, the resources to influence society are immense and difficult to counteract. The canaries do not merely report the present — they mark thresholds that, once crossed, tend to stay crossed.

07 · Tipping Points

Three Doors That Lock Behind You

Beyond the gradual checkpoints lie a handful of trigger events that could cause an abrupt leap in concentration — non-linear shocks after which redistributing power would be extraordinarily difficult. These are not slow drifts but step-functions, and naming them serves a single purpose: to make preventive action possible while there is still something to prevent. Three scenarios are plausible before or around 2030.

The AI Coup

One entity — a superpower or a mega-corp — develops an AI far ahead of anyone else, one that can hack all networks or improve itself, and keeps it proprietary. First-mover advantage compounds: it uses AI to build better AI, out-strategises every rival, and surveils everyone, while the rest become dependent or subservient. Power concentrates exponentially around the controller.

Crisis Capitalism on Steroids

A severe global depression or climate disaster around 2026–2027 decimates small business and middle-class wealth. Cash-rich billionaires and mega-funds buy up land, companies, and resources at fire-sale prices under the banner of rescuing the economy. The world emerges with the top 0.1% owning nearly everything — and the assets are never given back.

Full Techno-Autocracy

A major power perfects the integration of surveillance, AI, and force: every digital footprint monitored, dissenters neutralised in real time, robots enforcing law on the ground. A successful rollout in a large country, met with no backlash, proves the model — and it is then exported, creating a bloc of digital dictatorships ruling billions.

Each of these is a point of no return. The AI coup turns on the brutal logic of the first mover: once one player is far enough ahead, it accelerates away and everyone else becomes a tenant on its land. Crisis capitalism is the oldest of the three — we watched it rehearse in 2008 and again in 2020, when the wealthy rebounded fastest and expanded their share during the recovery — but at a more violent magnitude it would privatise the world's infrastructure under a few owners as a trade for debt relief. And the techno-autocracy is the convergence of all four pillars in one place: China's evolving social credit system fused with AI policing is a prototype, and a mature version, where no protest can organise and no criticism goes unseen, becomes immune to pressure and nearly impossible to reverse.

The value of mapping these triggers is that they are visible before they complete. If observers notice one corporation nearing an AI breakthrough, or surveillance infrastructure being built at speed without oversight, intervention through policy, global cooperation, or public outcry is still possible. After the fact, the new structure locks in for a long time. These are doors that swing shut behind whoever walks through first.

08 · The Narrow Window

Approaching a Power Singularity

Absent any change in course, the end of this decade arrives at a world where real power — economic, military, political, technological — is held by a historically tiny elite. The four pillars of narrative control, coercive force, economic production, and information are all moving toward high concentration and reinforcing one another in the hands of the few. The early signs are visible now and will sharpen each year: extreme inequality statistics, corporate monopolies, youth glued to algorithmic content, autonomous-weapons tests. Several tipping-point events could accelerate the convergence dramatically before 2030, slamming shut the window for any meaningful redistribution.

The task at this stage is diagnosis — recognising that these patterns are systemic, interconnected, and largely unprecedented in combination. Each pillar alone would be concerning; together they suggest we may be approaching a power singularity, a point at which the normal checks and balances of society no longer function because power has effectively become singular, held by a small coordinated network of elites or even by one entity. History has known tyrants and oligarchies, but those were bounded by geography and by the technology of their day. This time the scale is global and the tools are immense.

The window we have is essentially the next few years. If by 2030 most of the canaries have sung and one of the major triggers has occurred, humanity will likely be locked into a new regime of power distribution for a long time. In that regime, reversing course would be exceedingly difficult: those in power would have surveillance to spot resistance, narrative control to spin any injustice, autonomous force to crush any revolt, and tech and wealth leverage to buy compliance. The very tools that produce the concentration also defend it.

This report does not predict an inevitable dystopia. It signals a probable trajectory given current data, and it names what to watch for. Trajectories can be altered if enough awareness and will is mustered in time. The fate of power distribution in 2030 — and with it the fate of liberal democracy, economic equity, and human rights — may well be decided in the coming years. Diagnosing the problem is the first step. The next, beyond the scope of this document, is to ensure that the year 2030 finds us in a world where power, opportunity, and control over destiny are shared by the many and not monopolised by the few. For now, we must watch the checkpoints, and be honest about what they imply.
