An ant colony shares one telos. Every body in it is tuned to the same end — feed the queen, defend the mound, extend the trail — and so the colony can be read as a single intention wearing a million legs. Humanity is not like this. We are the species that argues about where it is going while it is going there, and the argument never resolves, because there is no single destination written into us to resolve it toward.
This is the first thing telodiversity asks us to take seriously. The word comes from telos — purpose, end, the thing a striving is for — and it names a fact that is easy to state and hard to hold: human beings do not converge on one purpose. The futurist Giannandrea Giammanco coined it precisely to give a name to "the diversity of human intentionality and its underlying drivers," and the naming matters, because what we cannot name we keep trying to wish away.
Almost every grand design for human affairs smuggles in a North Star. The market assumes we all, underneath, want more. The state assumes we all, underneath, want order. The movement assumes we all, underneath, want justice as it defines justice. Each is a quiet bet that beneath the noise of human difference lies one true end that the right system will reveal and the wrong ones merely obscure. Telodiversity says the bet is lost before it is placed. The noise is not noise. The difference goes all the way down.
To design as if there were a North Star is to build a compass for a sky that has none — and then to spend the centuries explaining why so many people keep walking the wrong way. The more honest move is to stop looking for the star and start looking at the field of directions itself.
If there is no single end, there is still a shape to the disagreement. Telodiversity is not a flat list of preferences — it is a spectrum, and Giammanco draws its poles starkly. At one extreme stand the ends of power: domination, control, predation, the will to make the world bend. At the other stand the ends of peace: harmony, compassion, care, the will to let the world be. Most people, most of the time, live somewhere in the vast middle, carrying a personal blend of both.
The poles are real, but the middle is where the design problem lives. Between domination and compassion lies every conceivable mixture: the ambition that builds and the ambition that consumes; the love of order that protects and the love of order that crushes; the pursuit of recognition, wealth, knowledge, beauty, belonging, service, pleasure — each capable of bending toward harmony or toward harm depending on what it meets. A single person holds several of these at once, in shifting proportion, and rarely with a clear view of their own ratio.

Ambition, creation, recognition, knowledge, wealth, belonging — ends that can tilt either way, and usually carry traces of both poles at once.

Some are driven by power, domination and predation; others earnestly seek peace, harmony and compassion. Between those extremes lies every possible mix.
Seeing ends as a spectrum rather than a verdict changes the question we ask of a person or a faction. We stop asking "are they good?" and start asking "where on the field do they sit, and what happens when their position meets the others?" That shift — from sorting people into the righteous and the wicked, toward mapping where their purposes actually point — is the move that makes coordination thinkable at all.
The reflex, when faced with telodiversity, is to call for consensus — more dialogue, more shared values, a wider table, until everyone finally wants the same thing. It is a generous reflex, and it fails, because it misreads the problem. Consensus is a method for resolving disagreement about means when ends already align. It has no purchase when the ends themselves are what differ.
Watch where the failure modes cluster. Each is a way of pretending the spectrum can be collapsed.
Notice that the most dangerous of these wears the friendliest face. A system that promises consensus and cannot deliver it does not stay neutral; it slides toward coercion, because once you have declared that everyone really wants the same thing, the people who visibly do not become a problem to be managed. The dream of one shared end has a way of ending in the suppression of the others. Telodiversity is, among other things, a warning label on that dream.
The alternative is not despair. It is to stop treating difference as a defect awaiting cure and to start treating it as the permanent terrain on which anything must be built. A system that survives is not one that has abolished conflicting ends. It is one that has learned to hold them.
Here is the inversion that makes telodiversity useful rather than merely sobering. Stop treating conflicting interests as the thing a system must overcome, and start treating them as the thing a system must take in. The diversity of ends is not the storm the structure has to weather. It is the load the structure has to be engineered around — the way a bridge is engineered around the weight it will actually carry, not the weight we wish it carried.
This is what systems thinking adds to the coinage. The question is not whether a given end is righteous in isolation — that question has no answer and asking it only restarts the war. The question is whether a set of ends, placed together inside a structure, produces coherence or chaos: whether they can be made to complement and constrain one another, or whether they tear at each other until the whole thing shakes apart. Coherence and chaos are properties you can observe and even measure — levels of conflict, resilience, alignment — without ever issuing a moral verdict on anyone's telos.
Good design has always quietly known this. It channels difference rather than denouncing it.
Let competitive and acquisitive ends power innovation and effort — then bound the game so winning cannot mean breaking the board for everyone else.
Assume some will seek control for its own sake, and meet them with checks, accountability and friction — not with the hope that they will simply stop.
Engineer the structure so that pursuing one's own purpose tends to serve the shared one — aligning private ambition with collective coherence by design.
A solution must work with our pluralism, not against it — finding structures that reduce destructive conflict and foster coherence, rather than wishing everyone shared one idea of the good.
A market that turns the hunger for gain into useful goods; a constitution that turns the appetite for power into a contest of accountable offices; a court that turns the thirst for vengeance into procedure — each is a machine for metabolising a difficult end into a tolerable outcome. None of them works by changing what people want. They work by changing what wanting it does. That is the craft telodiversity points toward: not the conversion of human purposes, but their channelling.
If difference cannot be argued away and should not be coerced away, what is left? Weight it. A coordination layer that takes telodiversity seriously does not pretend all ends are identical, and it does not rank them on a moral ladder and discard the lower rungs. It does something harder and more honest: it gives different purposes different weight, openly, by what they do to the coherence of the whole — and it keeps every voice in the calculation even when it cannot give every voice the same say.
Erasing difference and weighting it look similar from a distance and are opposites up close. Erasure decides in advance which ends are legitimate and writes the rest out of the system — cleaner, faster, and brittle, because the written-out ends do not disappear; they go underground and return as instability. Weighting keeps the full spectrum in view and asks, continuously, how much room each purpose can be given before it starts to collapse the others. The first treats pluralism as a phase to be ended. The second treats it as the standing condition to be governed.
This is why the move from judgment to understanding is not softness. To understand an end you find repugnant — to map where it sits, what feeds it, what it will do when it meets the others — is the only way to weight it correctly. Moralising it lets you feel clean while it keeps acting on the system from outside your model. Understanding it brings it inside the model, where it can be bounded. Compassion and rigour, here, are the same instrument.
Humanity will never be monolithic in intent. The work is not to make us one — it is to build structures that let the many be coherent.
So the design brief is not "find the North Star." There is none, and the search for one has a long record of ending in fire. The brief is to build coordination that can hold a species pointing in every direction at once — that weights the spectrum of ends instead of flattening it, channels conflict instead of denouncing it, and stays honest about the fact that the difference it is governing will never go away. To weight difference rather than erase it is not a compromise with an imperfect world. It is the only design that takes the world as it actually is.
Rather than designing utopias based on how humans should be, we can design effective systems based on how humans truly are.
